The Unlikely Birth of Boardlords Chess Club: A Story of Passion and Potential

In the heart of Mashimoni, a vibrant community within Mathare, a game of strategy and skill was ignited. Our founder, Mr. David, a university-educated enthusiast, brought back stories of chess, a game he’d learned a few moves of, sparking curiosity and interest among locals. Despite his limited knowledge, Mr. David’s passion was contagious, drawing in players like the now Lead Coach James. Thus, Boardlords Chess Club was born—a testament to community-driven growth.

From humble beginnings with just three learners, the club has flourished into a thriving community of 34 dedicated players. Our progress has been remarkable, with consistent participation and impressive performances at regional and national levels. In 2025, eight players represented us at nationals, with most ranking in the top 10 nationwide.

However, financial constraints limit our reach. We rely on partners like ChallengeAid Africa to support our talented players. This year, with their help, 6 out of 8 players scored 4 points and above at regionals, showcasing their potential.

We’re calling on supporters to help send our players to the upcoming national championship. Your contribution will be instrumental in nurturing talent and fostering growth. We’ll provide detailed reports on fund usage and player progress, ensuring accountability and transparency.

If you’re moved to support a learner’s journey, please reach out. Let’s empower these young minds and show that chess isn’t just for the privileged—it’s for anyone with passion and drive.
